The Renovation of the Michigan Union
May 2018 – Winter 2020
After nearly 100 years as the heart of U-M’s campus life, the Michigan Union has temporarily closed for some very exciting renovations. From the beginning of the renovation planning process, students from the Michigan Union Board of Representatives and Building A Better Michigan were instrumental in surveying student support and advocating for improvements to the Union. Here are a few of the new features you can look forward to when the Union reopens in 2020.
A canopied entrance on the north side of the building will include an ADA-accessible ramp, just one of the many building changes designed to increase inclusivity.
An enclosed courtyard will offer a casual, year-round lounge with a nearby coffee bar.
On the 2nd floor, the IdeaHub will serve as a resource for all student organizations, providing opportunities for collaboration, innovation and learning.
A new space on the first floor will feature a double-sided fireplace and more room for casual gatherings, conversation and studying.
