The Renovation of the Michigan Union
May 2018 – Winter 2020
After nearly 100 years as the heart of U-M’s campus life, the Michigan Union is closing for some very exciting renovations. From the beginning of the renovation planning process, students from the Michigan Union Board of Representatives and Building A Better Michigan were instrumental in surveying student support and advocating for improvements to the Union. Here are a few of the new features you can look forward to when the Union reopens in 2020.
A canopied entrance on the north side of the building will include an ADA-accessible ramp, just one of the many building changes designed to increase inclusivity.
An enclosed courtyard will offer a casual, year-round lounge with a nearby coffee bar.
On the third floor, the IdeaHub will serve as a resource for all student organizations, providing opportunities for collaboration, innovation and learning.
A new space on the first floor will feature a double-sided fireplace and more room for casual gatherings, conversation and studying.
